Writing in the Morning

November 5, 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

I was reading about the poet William Stafford  (1914 – 1993) for a project I’m working on for school about Civilian Public Service Camps in WWII (he was a CO in WWII and in CPS Camps from 1942 – 1946), when I came across something fabulous his daughter, Kim Stafford, wrote about her father’s habit of writing every day, first thing in the morning:

“Most of us read or hear the daily news, beginning each day with a dose of another person’s truth.  My father had a different way: to create the news of our common life by writing your own.  This act is true freedom and constructive citizenship.  It is available to all of us.”
